One of the museum's most recent acquisitions, The Emaciated Horse (circa 1931-1932, hanging scroll, ink on paper) is of interest to historians of Chinese painting, poetry, and politics alike. The artist Pu Jin (1893-1966), also called Xuezhai, was a Manchu prince and cousin of China's last emperor. The painting's political symbolism derives from a centuries-old tradition of horse painting, and is made more explicit by the poetic inscriptions written by leading members of the former Qing dynasty.
