of Lights

"Just wait until Illumination--it's incredible." As a newcomer to Oberlin College, these words--or comparable--were uttered to me dozens of times prior to and during Reunion-Commencement Weekend. At 8:30 on Sunday evening, with husband in tow, I strolled toward the growing crowd on Tappan Square. It was magical. The twinkling lights and their colors, so difficult to capture in photographs, transformed Tappan Square into a fairylike plaza. Munching on popcorn and homemade apple pie, we made our way through the throngs of alumni, seniors, parents, and townspeople enjoying the spirited tunes of the Commencement Band.
