Volunteer for Oberlin
Alumni Volunteer Positions
|
The Alumni Association would not be able to support such a wide range of programs and activities without the dedication and commitment of many alumni. We value the contributions of alumni and encourage you to find a volunteer activity that interests you. There are many ways to stay engaged! As a volunteer you can:
Get involved with a regional club in your area.
Recruit new students for Oberlin as an Admissions Recruiter.
Encourage others to make a difference through fundraising as a Class Agent.
Host an event at your home.
Host an event at your office/other location.
You can indicate your desire to volunteer by editing the "Miscellaneous" section of your Alumni Directory Profile. You can also contact the Alumni Office at (440) 775-8692 or alumni@oberlin.edu to talk to someone about volunteer opportunities.
Admissions Volunteering
Alumni play an important role in the recruitment of prospective students. The interaction you have with students is critical in bringing Oberlin to life and in ultimately encouraging a student to apply to and enroll at Oberlin. Volunteers can help by representing Oberlin at a college fair, by speaking with students at receptions, and by interviewing students. More information, including the Alumni Recruiter Information Form, is available online at the Alumni Recruiting Network Web site.
Help others- and yourself- through the Office of Career
Services
Visit the Office of Career Services website for more information on the services offered below!
Post a Post-Graduate Job or Summer Internship for Oberlin Students
Summer internship and post-graduate job leads from our alumni are critical to the success of Oberlin students and are greatly appreciated by the Office of Career Services. If you know of any positions within your organization please submit them to Career Services. We will share your opportunity with Oberlin students through our online recruiting system, ObieOpps.
Offer a Winter Term Internship
Winter Term (the month of January) presents an opportunity for you to share your expertise with a current student and help him/her learn more about your career field. Winter Term internships are designed to provide students with realistic exposure to occupational fields in which they are interested.
Talk with Your Employer About On-campus Recruitment
Talk with your employer about recruiting for new hires at the College through our structured on-campus recruitment program. It is one of the most effective methods for your employer to recruit students and maintain a visible presence on campus. Contact the main office at 440-775-8140, or oberlin.careers@oberlin.edu, and you will be connected with a member of our professional staff.
Offer Winter Term or Summer Housing
The greatest need for housing is during Winter Term when many students pursue internships in locations other than their hometown. It can be very difficult and expensive for students to rent an apartment for one month during Winter Term or for three months during the summer. Oftentimes the cost of renting an apartment at the market rate for a city will deter a student from choosing to accept an internship. Your ability to offer housing to Oberlin students would be greatly appreciated!
Visiting Campus?
If you plan to be visiting campus, and would be interested in talking with students informally or on a career panel, please let us know. Contact the main office at 440-775-8140, or oberlin.careers@oberlin.edu, and you will be connected with a member of our professional staff.
Serve as a Career Mentor
One of the most popular ways to assist students is to serve as an Oberlin alumni career mentor/advisor through ObieWeb. Career mentors are willing to talk to current students about their career field, to share advice and information, and to help facilitate networking. Typically, this involves one or two conversations with a student. If both you and the student prefer, you could talk more frequently or over a longer period of time. While most alumni in ObieWeb are willing to talk to students when contacted, many students are hesitant to alumni without some indication that the person is open to being contacted. Consequently, students appreciate alumni who have indicated their interest in serving as a career mentor.
Pre-Professional Program Involvement
Join the growing group of Oberlin alumni as they participate in the Business Scholars Program, the Entrepreneurship Scholars Program, the Law Scholars Program, and with supporting students interested in medical careers. Opportunities exist to speak with a group of students, network with students and other Oberlin alumni at regional events, and to work with students through internships and shadowing experiences specific to these professions. Please contact the main office at 440-775-8140, or oberlin.careers@oberlin.edu, and you will be connected with the appropriate staff member.
You can also help yourself by joining one or more Oberlin Career Networks, which allow you to network with other Obies in fields of interest to you. You can join these networks by editing the "Miscellaneous" section of your Alumni Directory Profile.
