A message from the Chair of the Board of Trustees

Robert Lemle small headshotIn the years that lie ahead, the Board of Trustees of Oberlin College will be making critical decisions regarding the College’s future. Given both Oberlin’s prospects and the challenges it faces, it is particularly important that the College be guided by Board members who understand the educational, social, financial, and administrative issues facing American higher education and who are willing to work hard to address them.

Oberlin is unusual among liberal arts colleges in that, since 1878, six of the 34 seats on its Board of Trustees are filled through direct election by the alumni. Each alumni-elected Trustee serves a six-year term, and the terms are staggered so that one Alumni Trustee is elected each year. It is now that time of year in which the alumni are urged to elect the Trustee who will serve for the next six years (July 1, 2010 to July 1, 2016). I urge your informed participation in this election.

This web page provides information about the Board and the election process, as well as information on each of the candidates to help you make your informed choice. Let me also suggest that in the future you participate in the nominating process itself. You may do so by submitting a nomination form in which you outline your nominee's credentials.

Oberlin needs your attention, your interest, and your vote. Thank you for helping elect the strong Board your alma mater deserves.

Robert Lemle '75 , Chair
Oberlin College Board of Trustees

Voting Procedures
Vote for one (1) candidate only. Any person upon whom the College has conferred a degree is eligible to participate in this election. To vote electronically, you must be a registered member of Oberlin's Online Community. To be counted, your ballot must be received no later than 5 p.m. EST, Wednesday, November 25, 2009. The Board of Canvassers (the Secretary of the College and the Director of Libraries) certifies the results of the election.

Of the two candidates, the one receiving the most votes will be declared elected for a full term of six years beginning July 1, 2010. The two candidates on the ballot have been selected in accordance with Article I, Section 4, of the Bylaws of Oberlin College. The Trustee Search Committee of the Alumni Council certifies that each candidate has agreed to serve if elected.
