In preparation for the museum’s renovation project and subsequent shutdown, the AMAM has loaned works from its permanent collection to regional and national museums. This effort will ensure that these are seen and enjoyed by new audiences and in new settings.
discusses the paintings, sculptures, and objects in more depth, and uses the voices of Akron staff to relate their impressions of some of the most important modernist works from the AMAM.
The first series of podcasts is related to the exhibition "Rethinking Art: Objects and Ideas from the 1960s and 70s." Rethinking Art comprises artworks by 10 artists from the collections of the Akron Art Museum and the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College, including several key artistic thinkers of the 1960s and 1970s. The exhibition presents a sampling of explorations during that period that changed the future of contemporary art. Additionally, we include a podcast focusing on the AMAM's important 1968 painting by Frank Stella, Agbatana III, also on loan to the AAM.
Also available is an overview of "Familiar Faces: Chuck Close in Ohio Collections." Two prints from the AMAM collection are included in this show, which brings together over 30 other works by Close, including paintings, handmade paper pulp pieces, photographs, a tapestry and various types of prints. Many are well over life-sized, but there are also more intimately scaled prints and studies. The images range from colorful, abstracted visages to black and white, realistic self-portraits and from recent works to old favorites.
These podcasts are taken from conversations in the Akron galleries with Dr. Barbara Tannenbaum, Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Akron Art Museum; Ellen Rudolph, Curator of Exhibitions; and
Alison Caplan (OC '00), Associate Educator; and Jason Trimmer, AMAM Curator of Education.
