Contest Flyer

The Allen Memorial Art Museum and the Oberlin College Creative Writing Program seek submissions of poetry for the upcoming May First Thursday evening hours. April is National Poetry Month and this event will feature a reading of poetry inspired by works on view in the AMAM galleries.

Guidelines: We are asking for poems written in response to,  describing, or inspired by works of visual art, such as painting, sculpture or photography at the art museum. Submissions can be about any work of art currently ON VIEW in the AMAM galleries, in either a temporary exhibition or the permanent collection. Submissions originally written in a language other than English are encouraged, but we do ask that an English translation be provided.

Submissions from ALL members of the college and public are welcome. Featured poems will be selected by AMAM and Creative Writing faculty and staff. The works will be selected based on creating a balanced program for the evening. Some poets will be invited to read their work at The Muse in the Museum event, and a larger selection of poems will be published as a booklet and available at the event.  By submitting your poem, you are giving us permission for the poem to be reprinted.

Submissions can be emailed to:
Curator of Education Jason Trimmer at: jtrimmer [at]

Please include the following information in your submission

Your Name,  Address, and contact information (email and phone), Title of museum work of Art and Artist, and the Title of the Poem. Each poet may enter up to two submissions, with the total entry not exceeding six pages. Please submit entries in the form of a Word document.

The “Muse in the Museum” readings will take place at the Allen Memorial Art Museum on Thursday, May 7, beginning at 5:30pm.
