Elephants on Parade

Font size: AAA

A paper-mache elephant led the 1936 Oberlin College Mock Convention parade. Unable to secure a live pachyderm, the convention organizers rented for $60 the artificial one from the Cleveland Artificial Flower Company.

Bernice Anderson ’42 rides atop “Frieda” while Richard MacDermott ’42, from Wellington, Ohio, looks on in the parade at the 1940 Mock Convention.

Coeds help to raise the tent to house “Frieda,” the 5,500-pound elephant, during the 1940 Convention.
