Born in North London to an English father and a Jamaican mother, Zadie Smith graduated from Cambridge in 1997. Her first novel, White Teeth, tells the story of three ethnically diverse families in contemporary London. It went on to win the Guardian First Book Award, the Whitbread First Novel Award, and the Commonwealth Writers Prize.
Smith’s subsequent novels, The Autograph Man, On Beauty, and NW, have also won prizes and recognition. She is a professor of creative writing at New York University.
