Captain Alva Bradley, an alumnus and Cleveland shipping magnate, pledged $20,000 toward Peters Hall. College administration assumed that Bradley would provide the balance to complete the building. When Captain Bradley died on November 27,1885, Peters Hall was just a shell; now, it was necessary to identify a new donor.
