Best practices for faculty supporting student mental health

  1. Create a positive and inclusive environment where all students feel respected and valued.
  2. Encourage open communication and allow students to share their thoughts, feelings and experiences.
  3. Integrate relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation, into daily routines.
  4. Encourage physical activity, such as stretching or exercise breaks, to reduce stress.
  5. Foster a growth mindset by focusing on effort and progress rather than just achievement and grades.
  6. Teach social and emotional skills, such as empathy, conflict resolution, and problem-solving.
  7. Promote a healthy work-life balance by avoiding overloading students with too much homework.
  8. Provide resources and referrals for mental health support when necessary.
  9. Be aware of and responsive to signs of distress in students.
  10. Regularly check in with students and ask for their feedback on the classroom environment.
