I received my B.S. degree from Cornell University and my M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. My specialty is Chinese politics, on which I have published five books and dozens of articles on local politics, popular participation, and political economy. I teach about these subjects as well as Asian politics and political economy, Marxist theory, and comparative politics. My current research focuses on workers' politics in contemporary China. This video profile concerns my teaching and its relationship to my scholarship. It also explains how I reconcile my politics with owning a sports car.
