Narrow, typically ~5 km wide at base
Have a asymmetric V shape, with a gentle seaward slope, narrow base, and steeper slope rising to volcanic islands or continental volcanoes
Volcanoes may explosive, i.e. Mt. St. Helens or Mt. Pinatubo
