Beyond the Sea

Gail Schwieterman, a December 2013 graduate, will study shark conservation efforts around the world as a Thomas J. Watson fellow. The Watson fellowship is a highly competitive, national scholarship program that awards graduating seniors a one-year grant of $25,000 for independent study and travel outside of the United States. A biology major at Oberlin, Schwieterman is fulfilling her lifelong passion for conservation. During the Watson year, she will work with an organization that monitors commercial fishing in Costa Rica, volunteer on cage diving boats in South Africa, and participate in a public awareness campaign to ban shark fin soup in Hong Kong.
