A New Class of Scholars

Rachel Manning, a junior majoring in sociology and East Asian studies with a Chinese language concentration, is situated in the atrium of the AJ Lewis Center for Environmental Studies to complement her recent honor as a 2013 Udall Scholar. The prestigious scholarship is awarded to juniors or seniors committed to careers in the environment, health care, or tribal public policy, as well as leadership potential and academic achievement. Manning is cofounder of the Mountain Garden Initiative, a school-based garden in Harlan County, Kentucky. The initiative addresses food access issues in Appalachia and integrates lessons about the garden and environmental conservation into Cumberland Elementary School’s science curriculum.

Manning is among this year’s contingent of students who have won highly competitive grants and fellowships from leading foundations. These awards aid students in their tuition and research efforts, allowing them to pursue career aspirations and explore challenging new endeavors.
