Orbs. Womb chairs. Ball chairs. However you reference them, they are simply a uniquely made cushy seat in which to study notes, read a book, finish a paper, write a poem, meditate, or, shhhh … take a catnap.

Created in 1963 by Finnish interior designer Eero Aarnio, the 12 red, green, and yellow sparkling ball chairs are located throughout the second and fourth levels of the Oberlin College Library in the Seely G. Mudd Learning Center. The ball chairs are part of the Main Library’s 1974 original furnishings and are a favorite hideaway for many students. Completely refurbished in 2011, the chairs also are a popular attraction for persons visiting the library while on a campus tour or during an alumni reunion.
