Remaking Macbeth 28 June 2013
Many directors have been true to Shakespeare’s classic Macbeth but some like Assistant Professor of Theater Justin Emeka ’95 opt for a different interpretation. He chose to incorporate African and African American culture, and the union of northern and southern cultures into his vision of the dark tragedy.
With the Reconstruction-era as his backdrop, Emeka inserted African American culture and highlighted racial and class struggles to lend new meaning to the concepts of power and struggle. The three witches, who prophesized the rise and fall of Macbeth, appear as former slaves, using music and interpretive dance to share his fate.
