A Dream in Harlem

Music, dance, and various traditions from the African Diaspora combine to present an enchanted concrete jungle inhabited by spirits who revel in the magical and playful nature of summer love. This unconventional retelling of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream takes place in Harlem, New York, and interconnects the play’s four lovers and a comical troupe of bumbling actors from the human world with those of a fairy kingdom in the supernatural realm.

Justin Emeka ’95, professor of theater and Africana studies, directs the production that also features third-year visual arts major Mark Blanchard ’14, and recent graduate and assistant director Daisy Peele ’13. The Classical Theater of Harlem is staging the free performance through July 30.
