Seuss as Muse 09 August 2013
Conservatory of Music students don the familiar Cat in the Hat hat as they wait for area schoolchildren to arrive for an afternoon performance of The Sneetches. The classic Dr. Seuss children’s tale about classism and tolerance was transformed into a symphonic poem and presented in Finney Chapel.
Oberlin and Sidney Sobel of Rochester, New York, commissioned Spanish composer Lorenzo Palomo to set the story to music. Oberlin Orchestra conductor Raphael Jiménez along with actor-narrator John de Lancie staged the premiere before a receptive audience.
