Summer Discoveries 23 August 2013
Second-year student Willie Burke spent the summer working with a molecular ion lensing system and other instruments as a research assistant for chemistry professor Matthew Elrod. The pair used models to predict short-term air pollution episodes and long-term climate change effects. The atmospheric chemistry research of the Elrod lab is but one of many environmentally themed research projects conducted in the natural sciences at Oberlin.
Students like Burke have assisted faculty this summer in more than 70 research projects. “The big benefit in general about doing research at Oberlin is that there aren’t any graduate students or postdocs to compete for your professor’s attention,” Elrod says.
