A Lens Into Legacy 18 September 2013
A.G. Miller, chair of religion department and his wife, Brenda Grier-Miller, associate dean of Student Academic Services, admire a photo of Ida Gibbs Hunt, Mary Church Terrell, and Anna Julia Cooper, all from the Class of 1884. They each graduated from Oberlin at a time when fewer than 50 African American women in the United States held the coveted BA degree.
The Washington Post photograph shows them at their 68th college reunion in 1952. Next to the Millers is a plaque permanently on view in Mudd library that commemorates 100 years of higher education for African Americans in Oberlin. The Negro Alumni and Friends of Oberlin College dedicated the plaque in 1935.
