Ted Baker '83, piano

Philadelphia native Ted Baker has had an extensive musical career as a keyboard artist that has afforded him work on stage, in the recording studio, and in the theater. His talents have placed him in the company of many contemporary recording and performing artists including Steely Dan, Elvis Costello, and Lee Ritenour.

A piano performance and jazz composition major while at Oberlin, Baker did considerable freelance work as a keyboardist in Philadelphia with Grover Washington Jr., Dexter Wansel, and Jean Carne. He moved to New York in 1990.

Once in New York, Baker began using his keyboard skills for such theater and musical productions as the Who's Tommy, Randy Newman's Faust, Peter Townshend's The Boy Who Heard and Music Psychoderelict, Disney's The Lion King, and Smokey Joe's Café. Baker also has worked with such varied musicians and singers as include Ann-Margret, Petula Clark, Shirley Bassey, Helen Reddy, Lesley Uggams, Don Alias, Ronald Shannon Jackson, the Markley Band, the Elevators, Peter Gallagher, and others.

Baker has toured and recorded with the rock band Steely Dan (Two Against Nature and Everything Must G0), and individually with band members Donald Fagan (Morph the Cat) and Walter Becker (Circus Money). He recently concluded a 10-year stint touring with folk artist Art Garfunkel in 2008. He currently tours and records with acclaimed minimalist music composer Philip Glass (Orion, 2004) and the Philip Glass Ensemble.
