Summary

The Stanley King Jazz Collection includes magazines, correspondence, financial records for various touring bands in the 1940s, autographed playbills, jazz and blues sheet music, photographs, posters, concert programs, and various audio and moving image items. The collection is especially strong in objects related to Louis Armstrong, reflecting Mr. King’s fondness for early jazz. Additionally, the collection contains correspondence and original contracts from Benny Goodman, Fletcher Henderson, Bunk Johnson, Paul Hindemith, Paul Whiteman, and others. King, now retired, was a textile designer and manufacturer by profession. He has been an avid collector of memorabilia related to a number of interests besides American jazz, including George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Charles Lindbergh.

Work inventorying the collection is ongoing, and a detailed finding aid will be posted here once the work is complete. In the interim, contact con.special@oberlin.edu for information on accessing portions of the collection.
