The office of career services has announced six Mellon minority undergraduate fellowship awards for 1995-96, along with the students' mentors. The students who received them are Maleata Carson '98, a double-degree student majoring in vocal performance and Romance languages; Jada Eccleston '97, an African-American studies major; Eboni Francis '97, an African-American studies major; Tsitsi Jaji '97, a double-degree student majoring in piano and comparative literature; Shannon McDaniel '96, a geology and biology major; and Rebecca Wolfinger '98, a history major. Emerita professor of pianoforte Frances Walker is mentor to Carson; associate professor of African-American studies and department chair Adrienne Jones is mentor to Eccleston; professor of African-American studies James Millette is mentor to Francis; assistant professor of French and Nord faculty fellow Medoune Gueye is mentor to Jaji; professor of geology Steven Wojtal is mentor to McDaniel; and professor of German and chair of the German and Russian department Heidi Thomann Tewarson is mentor to Wolfinger.
Three students are continuing their research as second-year Mellon fellows: Damian Jones '96, an African-American studies major; Jason Molina '96, an art major; and Paul Westbrook '97, a computer science major. Their mentors are visiting assistant professor of art Jacques Wilmore, professor of African-American studies Yakubu Saaka, and associate professor of computer science and program director Robert Geitz.
