OBERLIN COLLEGE'S SPRING FLING FEATURES ALTERNATIVE ROCK GROUP THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS

April 25, 2001--Brooklyn's They Might Be Giants (TMBG), one of alternative rock's most enduring and innovative bands, will perform at Oberlin College Saturday, May 5. The concert will start at 2 P.M. in Dill Stadium, located on the corner of Woodland and Union streets. $15 tickets are available at the main desk in Wilder Student Union or by calling the Central Ticket Service at (440) 775-8169.

Lifelong friends John Flansburgh and John Linnell started TMBG in 1983, and released their first two albums on the independent label Bar/None. Their quirky style and catchy melodies soon became popular with college students, but it was with the 1990 release of Flood that the group won an international audience and scored a top ten single with "Birdhouse In Your Soul." In the early 90s they joined forces with with guitarist Dan Miller, bassist Dan Wienkauf, and drummer Dan Hickey.

TMBG are no strangers to the stage; they have performed more than 1200 shows and are constantly touring in the U.S. and Canada. They have toured Europe seven times, Japan four times, and Australia and New Zealand three times, expanding their horizons far beyond the typical limits of a rock band.

The band recently recorded the opening theme song to the Fox Television hit show, Malcolm in the Middle, and continues to work on the show's musical score. Last summer, they contributed the song "Doctor Evil" to the movie, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me; they also have recorded orchestral cues on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. TMBG recorded the musical opening for ABC Nightline Primetime's Brave New World specials and will release a children's CD called No! next year.

Baltimore-based SR-71--Mitch Allan, lead vocals and guitar; Jeff Reid, bass; Dan Garvin, drums; and Mark Beauchemin, guitar--and special guest OK Go will open for TMBG.

More information about the concert is available online. The bands will be interviewed before the concert, and the answers will be posted to the web site. Questions for the bands can be submitted online.
