SOUTHVIEW HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT IS FIRST RECIPIENT OF NEW OBERLIN SCHOLARSHIP FOR LORAIN COUNTY GRADUATES

AUGUST 10, 2001--Daniel Ortiz is the first Lorain County high school graduate to benefit from the newly established John D. and Marian H. Baum Endowed Scholarship Fund. Ortiz, a 2001 Southview High School graduate, was chosen as the recipient of the scholarship for his strong academic record and wide range of extracurricular interests.

In addition to participating in high school theater, Ortiz was a Southview 2000 Congressional Service Award Honoree and a tutor at the Lorain Activity center. Ortiz also was a member of the Latino Club, Model United Nations and Key Club.

Ortiz plans to take part in the Oberlin College theater program, Latino organizations on campus and Oberlin's community service program.

Ortiz also was among 65 students of color out of a field of 200 students nationwide selected by the College to join the Oberlin Scholars Program. The Southview graduate is also the recipient of the College's John Frederick Oberlin Scholarship, which is a merit based scholarship open to students in the US and Canada.

The John D. and Marian H. Baum Scholarship was established last year with a $120,000 gift to the College from Oberlin resident Marian Baum in memory of her husband John Baum, professor of mathematics at Oberlin from 1953 to 1982. Its purpose is to provide financial assistance to qualified Oberlin College students who are graduates of Lorain County high schools.

Now retired, Marian Baum was among the first licensed clinical psychologists in Lorain County and has been a teacher, researcher, practicing diagnostician, therapist and pediatric-psychology consultant in Ohio and California. In 1999, she received the College's annual award for distinguished service to the community in recognition of her work as a community mental health activist and children's health and education advocate.
