OBERLIN COLLEGE ORGANIZES LATINO CONFERENCE "HECHO IN AMERICA" SPOTLIGHTING NEW SCHOLARSHIPS IN LATINO STUDIES

SEPTEMBER 6, 2001--On September 15, 2001 the Department of History and Oberlin College will hold a conference that will focus on a wealth of fascinating new studies in the Latino world, including sociology, history, politics and literature. The conference will begin at 1:00 p.m. in Wilder Hall room 101. It is free and open to the public. û

The program will consist of a keynote address by Maria Montoya, associate Professor of history and American culture at the University of Michigan, and two additional sets of panel presentations. These panel presentations will include papers by Oberlin Collegeƒs Deborah Schildkraut, assistant professor of politics, on Latinos and electoral politics, Susana Pena, instructor, department of ethnic studies, Bowling Green State University, on "Narratives of the Nation and Sexual Identity: Cuban American Gay Men 'Remember' Cuba," and by Victor Ortiz, assistant professor, Latin American Studies, University of Illinois, Chicago, on the relationship between uses of "borderlands theory" and the diverse experiences of Latinos in the United States.

The other confirmed panelists are Ines Casillas, PhD candidate, American Culture, University of Michigan, Sergio de la Mora, assistant professor, Chicana/o University of California Davis and Emma Garcia, PhD candidate, romance language, University of Michigan. û û û û û û

In addition to showcasing some of the best and most exciting new scholarships in Latina/o studies, the symposium will offer Oberlin faculty, students, staff and community members with shared interest in Latina/o culture an important opportunity to meet and interact.
