OBERLIN DOUBLE DEGREE STUDENT RECEIVES DANIEL AKAKA SCHOLARSHIP

AUGUST 2, 2001-- Mandy Tuong, a double-degree student at Oberlin College, recently received the prestigious Daniel Akaka Scholarship from the Asian Pacific American Heritage Council (APAHC). The scholarship, named in honor of the first U.S. Senator of native Hawaiian ancestry and the only Chinese-American member of the U.S. Senate, is awarded to applicants based on academic accomplishments and community service.

Tuong is a rising fifth-year senior from St. Paul/Minneapolis, Minnesota, majoring in piano performance and history. As a first-generation Vietnamese-American whose family came to the U.S. in 1975, Tuong encountered racial discrimination at an early age and become interested in Asian-Pacific-American and civil rights issues.

This summer, Tuong is interning at the Legal Aid Society of Minneapolis in the Housing Discrimination Project. There, she assists with client relations, screens potential clients, and translates for Vietnamese clients--all in an effort to help Asian immigrants who suffer from housing discrimination.

Tuong was encouraged to apply for the APAHC scholarship by Moon-Ho Jung, a former assistant professor of history at Oberlin College. The APAHC seeks to unite individual Asian-Pacific-American organizations, allowing them to have greater public visibility and awards scholarships to students who share this goal.
