MIDDLE EAST EXPERT TO DISCUSS "THE QUESTION OF JERUSALEM: ASPECTS OF A SOLUTION" AT OBERLIN |

FEBRUARY 26, 2001--"The Question of Jerusalem: Aspects of a Solution" will be discussed by Middle East expert Rashid Khalidi in a free, public talk March 9 at Oberlin College. The president of the American Committee on Jerusalem, Khalidi is a professor of Middle East history and director of International Studies at the University of Chicago. He served as an advisor to the Palestinian delegation to the Madrid and Washington Arab-Israeli peace negotiations from October 1991 until June 1993. Khalidi is the author of Palestinian Identity: The Construction of National Consciousness. The book won the1997 Middle East Studies Associations Albert Hourani Book Award--"An impressive, thoughtful, layered, and well-documented study of key aspects of the evolution of modern Palestinian nationalism" (Kirkus Reviews). Khalidi has written over 70 scholarly articles on Middle East history and politics as well as numerous op-ed pieces for such publications as The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Los Angeles Times, and The Chicago Tribune. A frequent guest on numerous radio and television shows including All Things Considered, Talk of the Nation, Morning Edition, The News Hour with Jim Lehrer and Nightline, Khalidi has also appeared on the BBC, the CBC and the Voice of America. During his campus visit Khalidi will meet with students for an informal discussion session about the situation in Palestine and Israel. A film series exploring the Palestinian-Israeli conflict also has been arranged in conjunction with his visit. |
