FOUR OBERLIN COLLEGE GRADUATES JOIN THE PEACE CORPS

JULY 11, 2001--Four Oberlin College graduates have accepted volunteer positions with the Peace Corps that will take them to Nicaragua, Morocco, the Ukraine and Jordan. In addition, seven other Oberlin graduates are in the early stages of application to the agency for service during the coming year, says Peace Corps official Scot Roskelley.

The most recent graduate, Corona Brezina '01, is due to leave in early September to work in applied agricultural sciences in Nicaragua. Maria Marwill '59 will leave August 13 to work in business development in Morocco. Susanah Davis '92, who is going to teach English at a university in the Ukraine, will leave September 13. Eve Lauria '99 has just left to do community development in Jordan.

During any given year there are more than 20 Oberlinians stationed with the Peace Corps at every corner of the globe, involved in almost every imaginable capacity. This year, 21 Obies--from the classes of 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000- are serving in 17 countries: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Guatemala, Guinea, Honduras, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mali, Namibia, Nepal, Nicaragua, Panama, Senegal, Thailand, Togo, and the Ukraine.

The Oberlin alumni are among the 7300 Peace Corps volunteers in 77 countries working bring clean water to communities, teach children, help start new businesses and stop the spread of AIDS. Since the founding of the Peace Corps in 1961, more than 163,000 Americans have served in 135 nations.

To date, more than 448 alumni have acted as Peace Corps volunteers, making Oberlin seventh in the nation among the small colleges and universities whose graduates have served in the agency since its founding in 1961.

The College has had a strong relationship with the Peace Corps since the earliest days of the organization's existence. Between 1963 and 1967 the Peace Corps located one of its first regional recruiting and training centers on Oberlin's campus, often hiring faculty members and students to assist in administrative and educational tasks.
