HIP-HOP CONFERENCE TO FEATURE JOURNALIST DAVEY D AS KEYNOTE SPEAKER

MARCH 9, 2001--Hip-Hop 101, this year’s conference embracing Hip-Hop’s origin as a voice for urban Black youth will be held the weekend of March 16, 17 and 18 with Hip-Hop journalist, Davey D headlining as the keynote speaker.

Oberlin’s Hip-Hop dance group And What!?!? has planned this year’s conference with a variety of activities around the theme of "origins" and "roots" to educate and promote community through social, cultural, and educational activities.

Students from Oberlin High School are invited to participate in Hip-Hop 101 by entering a rap, poetry and essay contest entitled What Hip-Hop Means to Me. The winner will perform their winning piece during the And What!?!? show.

Hip-Hop culture is an outlet used by Black youth to express themselves about the daily occurrences of violence, poverty, police brutality, drugs and crime in their communities. This conference hopes to give the same reality expressed in Hip-Hop culture to the Hip-Hop 101 audience.

Davey D, founder of the FNC Newsletter and DaveyD.com web-site, will give Friday night’s keynote address entitled "Hip-Hop Chronicles: Hip-Hop and hearing the voices of Black youth oppression".

The Cincinnati group Mood, will perform as will the world famous breakdance crew Rock Steady Crew. A Breakdance Battle, a DJ Battle, a talk given by David Lamb of John Jay College, plus the showing of Style Wars are all featured events.

A panel discussion made up of a mix of Oberlin College students and faculty with the hope of putting Hip-Hop into the context of educating self will end the conference.
