OBERLIN SCHOOLS-COLLEGE PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCES NEW SCHOLARSHIP TO BENEFIT LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES

MARCH 20, 2001--Oberlin College is offering full-tuition scholarships beginning with the 2001-02 academic year for qualified graduates of Oberlin High School.

Superintendent of Schools James Gray and Oberlin College President Nancy Dye announced the new scholarship today.

"As part of our commitment to the community, Oberlin College is contributing its greatest resource--a first-class education--as an encouragement to all Oberlin students to pursue excellence and seek a college degree," said Dye. "This is the first of several steps that we hope and plan to take as part of the Schools-College Partnership," said Gray.

The scholarship targets graduates of Oberlin High School who reside in the school district and meet college admissions requirements. The Oberlin School district includes the City of Oberlin, and parts of New Russia, Pittsfield, Carlisle, and Amherst Townships.

Applicants must have resided in the area for at least four years preceding graduation and continue to reside there during the period of enrollment at Oberlin College. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact the College Admissions Office.

"The College is always willing to talk to prospective students about their situations and encourages the enrollment of non-traditional students," said Dye. "If we can help just one student, that’s a success."

The Oberlin Scholarship is available to any graduating senior who has been enrolled continuously at OHS for four or more years, completes an on-campus interview with the Admissions staff and meets Oberlin College’s standards for admission. Admission to the Conservatory of Music will be based on normal evaluation processes, which include an audition.

Transfer students are also eligible for the scholarship, as long as they meet Oberlin’s admissions requirements and are graduates of Oberlin High School who have met the residency requirement.

For more information, contact the Oberlin College Office of Admissions at 775-8411 or the Oberlin Partnership at 775-5500. Oberlin High School guidance counselors also have information about scholarship opportunities at Oberlin College.
