U.S. FOREIGN POLICY IN COLOMBIA IS TOPIC OF PUBLIC TALK MARCH 8 AT OBERLIN COLLEGE

MARCH 2, 2001--William O. Walker, the noted author of Drug Control in the Americas, will discuss United States foreign policy in Colombia Thursday, March 8 in a free, public talk at 7:30 P.M. in King 306 (on the corner of West College and North Professor streets).

Walker is frequently invited to speak on U.S. drug policy toward Colombia and Mexico. In Drug Control in the Americas, he examines the origins and development of drug control from WWI to the present and why drug dealers are undeterred by U.S. policy.

He has edited Drugs in the Western Hemisphere: An Odyssey of Cultures in Conflict as well as several other collections and has written about U.S.-Cuban relations in the Johnson years.

Walker received his Ph.D. in U.S. diplomatic history from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and is department history chair and professor of history and international relations at Florida International University in Miami. Before joining the University, he served for 16 years as a faculty member at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Walker's visit to campus is sponsored by La Alianza and the Oberlin Peace Activists League.
