OBERLIN COLLEGE JUNIOR WINS GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP

MAY 16, 2001--Adam Philips, a junior neuroscience major from Milford, Delaware, has been chosen as one of 302 undergraduate students from the 50 states and Puerto Rico to receive an award from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. He is one of two Goldwater Scholars at Oberlin College this year, selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,164 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The one and two year scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

During his senior year, Phillips--who has minors in both psychology and physics--plans to expand his knowledge in these fields, but also hopes to study religion and philosophy "so as to encompass non-scientific perspectives in [his] understanding of mind." After graduating from Oberlin in 2002, Phillips plans to obtain a Ph.D. in computational neuroscience and/or an M.D. with a specialization in psychiatry, and to pursue a career in neuroscience research, clinical psychology, or psychiatry.

"If I became a neuroscience researcher," says Phillips, "I would hope to apply the power and elegance of physics and mathematics to solve problems in cognitive neuroscience."

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency. Established in 1986, the scholarship program was designed to foster and encourage students who have already completed significant scientific research to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.

Goldwater Scholars have academic qualifications that garner the attention of prestigious post-graduate fellowship programs. Recent Goldwater Scholars have been awarded 39 Rhodes Scholarships (eight of the 32 awarded in the U.S. in 2000 and six in both 1998 and 1999), 32 Marshall Awards, 11 Churchill Awards, 10 Fulbright Scholarships, 30 Hughes Grants, 93 National Science Foundation Awards, and numerous other distinguished fellowships.
