TWO OBERLIN COLLEGE STUDENTS AWARDED FULBRIGHT SCHOLARSHIPS

MAY 23, 2001--Two recent Oberlin graduates, Tami Blumenfield '00 and Sabrina Rahman '01, have received Fulbright scholarships for the 2001-02 academic year. The Fulbright Scholars Program enables U.S. students, artists and other professionals to conduct independent research in over 140 nations. Congress has provided funding (and accepted contributions from participating countries) for the Fulbright Program since 1946, fostering mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchanges and providing an alternative to armed conflict.

Blumenfield, a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and an East-Asian studies major with a history minor, plans to study bilingual education among the Moso people of China's Yunnan Province, where she studied in 1999. She will continue her previous research on bilingual education in Naxi and Moso identity, for which she was awarded a Newton Prize by the Department of East Asian Studies at Oberlin College. Blumenfield received one of only two full Fulbright scholarships awarded to college graduates for study in China during the academic year 2001-2002.

Rahman, a German-studies and art history double major from Hillsdale, New Jersey, will explore Jewish contributions to art, literature, and culture in early twentieth-century Austria. Rahman will study at the University of Vienna in Austria, and at museums and cultural institutions including the Israelitische Kutluregemeinde, the Jewish Museum and the Österreichische In addition to her research, Rahman will teach English at a secondary school.

The Fulbright Scholars Program is designed to give recent B.S.and B.A. graduates, masters and doctoral candidates, and young professionals and artists opportunities for personal development and international experience. The Fulbright Program offers its participants opportunities for intellectual, professional, and artistic growth, and invaluable opportunities to work with people around the globe, exchanging professional and creative insights.
