OBERLIN COLLEGE SOPHOMORE WINS GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP

MAY 16, 2001--Jeremy Van Cleve, a sophomore mathematics major from Santa Fe, New Mexico, has been chosen as one of 302 undergraduate students from the 50 states and Puerto Rico to receive an award from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. He is one of two Goldwater Scholars at Oberlin College this year, selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,164 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The one- and two-year scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

Van Cleve is currently working on a research project in biology entitled "Molecular Genetic Studies of Regulation of Muscle Contraction." This summer, he will take part in the undergraduate research internship program at the Santa Fe Institute--a private, non-profit, multidisciplinary research and education center. After graduating from Oberlin, Van Cleve plans to attend graduate school in a field of applied math or science.

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency. Established in 1986, the scholarship program was designed to foster and encourage students who have already completed significant scientific research to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.

Goldwater Scholars have academic qualifications that garner the attention of prestigious post-graduate fellowship programs. Recent Goldwater Scholars have been awarded 39 Rhodes Scholarships (eight of the 32 awarded in the U.S. in 2000 and six in both 1998 and 1999), 32 Marshall Awards, 11 Churchill Awards, 10 Fulbright Scholarships, 30 Hughes Grants, 93 National Science Foundation Awards, and numerous other distinguished fellowships.
