AFTER SEPTEMBER 11: TWO IMPORTANT TALKS |
||||||||||||
NOVEMBER 30, 2001-- Democratic Congressman Sherrod Brown, who represents the 13th District of Ohio, will give a talk at 12:00 P.M. Monday, December 3, in Oberlin College's Lewis Environmental Studies Center Hallock Auditorium. The title of his talk is "The Hidden Effects of the War at Home." He will discuss legislation that has been passed in the wake of September 11 and the effects of these laws at home. Representative Brown is one of a handful of Congressman who voted against the USA Patriot Act, the anti-terrorism bill recently passed by Congress. He is also a critic of the potential effects of this act on civil liberties and free speech, and on the lives of international students studying in the United States. Kit Gage, Director of the National Committee Against Repressive Legislation, will give the second talk at 8 P.M. Tuesday, December 4, in Oberlin College's Lewis Environmental Studies Center Hallock Auditorium. The title of her talk is "Attack on Civil Liberties." She will speak about recent actions of the U.S. government in the name of national security and anti-terrorism, including the arrests of more than 1,000 immigrants and the passage of the USA Patriot Act, which broadly expands wiretapping and investigatory powers on all Americans. Gage is also the National Coordinator of the National Coalition to Protect Political Freedom and Director of the First Amendment Foundation. Each talk will be followed by a question and answer period. The Lewis Environmental Studies Center is located at 122 Elm Street in Oberlin. Both talks are free and open to the public. This program is sponsored by the Office of the President of Oberlin College, the Office of International Student Affairs, the Multicultural Resource Center and a variety of student campus organizations. |
