ARTIST RECITAL SERIES PRESENTS CONCERT BY THE AMERICAN BRASS QUINTET

OCTOBER 29, 2001-- The American Brass Quintet ("ABQ") performs in the second concert of the 2001-02 Artist Recital series on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 8:00 P.M. The concert takes place in Finney Chapel, located at the corner of Professor and Lorain Streets in Oberlin. To order tickets or a season brochure, please call the Oberlin Central Ticket Service at (440) 775-8169.

The ensemble that Newsweek calls "the high priests of brass" includes Raymond Mase and Kevin Cobb (trumpets), David Wakefield (horn), Michael Powell (trombone), and John D. Rojak (bass trombone).

The program will feature the Three Italian Madrigals, by Heinrich Schltz, Incisioni-Five Engravings in Brass, by Vittorio Rieti, and Brass Quintet, composed for the ABQ by Pulitzer-Prize winner Melinda Wagner. After intermission, the quintet will perform works by Stephen Foster, Josquin des Prs, Palestrina, and Johannes Martini. They conclude the program with Frost Fire, composed by Eric Ewazen and dedicated to the ABQ in honor of the ensemble's 30th anniversary.

In the U. S., the ABQ has performed on major concert series in all fifty states including at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center. The ABQ's foreign touring has taken it throughout Europe, Central and South America, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia.

Since its inception, the ABQ has maintained an extensive recording schedule. By the end of the 2001-2002 season, the ABQ will have made over forty-five recordings representing the largest body of serious brass chamber music ever recorded by one ensemble. The Quintet has recorded for Albany, Arabesque, BASF, Bridge, Columbia, CRI, Crystal, Cybele, Delos, Folkways, Japan Victor, Musical Heritage, New World, Nonesuch, Serenus, Summit, Titanic, Well-Tempered and several other labels.

Termed "positively breathtaking" by the New York Times, the Quintet has never wavered in its devotion to brass chamber music throughout its forty-one years. And, with its residencies at the Juilliard School and at the Aspen Music School in the summer, it continues to contribute to a rich future for the brass groups of tomorrow.

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, founded in 1865, is the nation's oldest continuously operating conservatory, and the only major music school in the country linked with a preeminent college of arts and sciences. The Conservatory offers majors in performance, composition, music education, music theory, electronic and computer music, jazz studies, music history, and a double major in piano performance and vocal accompanying. There are more than 400 public concerts on campus each year--most of them free--including performances by student ensembles, faculty members, and performances and master classes by guest artists.
