CONGRESSMAN BARNEY FRANK SPEAKS AT OBERLIN ON OCTOBER 13

OCTOBER 4 , 2001-- Longtime Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank will deliver a lecture entitled "America and the World" Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 8:00 P.M. in lecture hall A162 at the new science center. Frank will speak at Oberlin as part of the newly established Cole Distinguished Lectureship in Electoral Politics Series.

This speaker series is named in honor of, and made possible by, Richard and Dorothy Cole '56 who endowed the Oberlin Initiative in Electoral Politics (OEIP). The Politics Department began the OEIP in 1994 with the Coles to prepare students to enter the field of electoral politics. Since its first year 65 students have participated in the program, which consists of a preparatory seminar, a paid summer internship in some phase of electoral politics, and a post-internship seminar to reflect upon, integrate and write about experiences of the preceding summer. Frank will speak at Oberlin as the first Cole Distinguished Lecturer in Electoral Politics.

Frank was elected to the House of Representatives in 1980 on the Democratic ticket, and has focused his efforts on fighting discrimination, providing fair treatment towards immigrants and improving healthcare. He serves on the Committee on Financial Services and the Committee on the Judiciary. He is also the senior Democrat on the Housing Subcommittee. As one of the most liberal members of Congress, Frank has criticized the Republican impeachment efforts during the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, and has fought hard for abortion rights and gun control. In 1987 he voluntarily became America's first openly gay congressman.
