VISITING ARTIST AND SCHOLARS SERIES PRESENTS RENOWNED ART AND DESIGN CRITIC EDWARD GOMEZ

OCTOBER 1, 2001--Edward Gomez will present two free, public talks Wednesday, October 3, at the Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies. Gomez--an author, graphic designer, art and design critc and environmental activist--will lecture as part of the Visiting Artist and Scholarship Series sponsored by the Oberlin College Art Department and the Allen Memorial Art Museum. At 12:00 p.m. his first presentation will address "The Politics of the Environment: The Hudson River" and at 4:35 p.m. his second presentation will examine "Critical Issues in Contemporary Art."

With a fascinating history and dedication to the art world, Gomez--a specialist in Japanese modern art--has been awarded the Fulbright Fellowship and the Asian Cultural Council Fellowships to Japan. In additon, he has received the Pro Helvetia fellowship from Switzerland's national arts council in support of his research on the historic Swiss artist Adolf Wolfli.

Gomez, a native of Hudson, New York, is a former correspondent for Time magazine in the United States and overseas and was recently named a National Arts Journalism, Program Research Fellow for the 2001-2002 academic year at Columbia University. He is the founding editor of the Hudson River Herald, a newspaper that addresses environmental issues affecting the mid-Hudson Valley region.
