THE OBERLIN CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC PRESENTS JAZZ CONCERT NOV. 10 AND ANNOUNCES NEW SCHOLARSHIP

OCTOBER 22 , 2001-- A jazz concert showcasing the talents of such notable musicians as James McBride (saxophonist and best-selling author); trumpet player Michael Mossman; bassist Leon Dorsey; and pianist George Caldwell -- all graduates of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music -- will take place Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001 at 8:00 P.M. in Finney Chapel. The event is free and open to the public. Finney Chapel is located at the corner of Lorain (Route 511) and Professor Streets, across from Tappan Square.

Also featured on the program is the Oberlin Jazz Ensemble, directed by Wendell Logan, Professor of African-American Music and Chair of the Jazz Studies Program. The Conservatory has established an endowed scholarship in Logan's honor, recoSgnizing his remarkable accomplishments in the field of jazz studies at Oberlin, and his commitment to the program that he has long directed.

The fund was established by two of Logan's former students, Leon Dorsey '81, and James McBride '79, to provide an annual scholarship to an outstanding jazz studies student who is a current or potential undergraduate in the Conservatory.

"Endowing a scholarship is a meaningful tribute," says Marci Alegant, Assistant Dean of the Conservatory. "When the person being honored is a professor, it is particularly significant, and allows that professor to continue to make a difference in the lives of students, long after he or she retires, by providing future students the opportunity to study at Oberlin."

For more information, please call the Conservatory's Concert Production Office at (440) 775-6933.

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, founded in 1865, is the nation's oldest continuously operating conservatory, and the only major music school in the country linked with a preeminent college of arts and sciences. The Conservatory offers majors in performance, composition, music education, music theory, electronic and computer music, jazz studies, music history, and a double major in piano performance and vocal accompanying. There are more than 400 public concerts on campus each year--most of them free--including performances by student ensembles, faculty members, and performances and master classes by guest artists.
