OBERLIN SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK TO PERFORM AT OBERLIN COLLEGE OCTOBER 14

OCTOBER 5 , 2001-- The world-renowned Sweet Honey in the Rock will perform at 8 P.M. on October 14 in Oberlin's Finney Chapel as part of the College's 2001-2002 Convocation Series. The event is free and open to the public, however tickets are needed due to limited seating. Tickets can be picked up at the Central Ticket Service, located in the lobby of Hall Auditorium on Route 58, across the street from Tappan Square. CTS can be reached at 440-775-8169.

Sweet Honey in the Rock is the Grammy Award-winning African-American female a cappella ensemble with deep musical roots in the music of Africa and the sacred music of the black church as well as in jazz and the blues.

The sextet, which is composed of five singers and an American Sign Language interpreter, sing in the "19th-Century congregational style." The ensemble encompasses all styles of vocal music, combining powerful voices with hand-held and foot percussion, movement and narrative.

Founded by historian and scholar Bernice Johnson Reagon in 1973, Sweet Honey began as an outgrowth of the D.C. Black Repertory Theater, but it has since become a stereotype-shattering global phenomenon. International tours have taken the group to South America, Africa, Europe, China, Australia and New Zealand.

Their numerous recordings include Selections, the 1997 compilation album, which includes more than 30 songs from the eight albums they recorded for Flying Fish Records from 1976 to 1988. In 1989 the group won a Grammy for their version of Leadbelly's "Grey Goose" off the album Folkways, A Vision Shared.

The Convocation series continues Oberlin 's long tradition of bringing prominent thinkers and performers to the college community to explore the critical issues of the day.

This year's speakers are philosopher Martha S. Nussbaum on November 13, Ohio Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones, February 4; author, poet and screenwriter Sherman Alexie, March 5; civil rights leader Julian Bond, April 3; and organizational learning expert Paul Duguid, April 9.
