OBERLIN CONSERVATORY PRESENTS CONCERT FOR AREA STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES

SEPTEMBER 27, 2001-- On Saturday, October 6, at 11 a.m., the Oberlin Conservatory will present a children's concert, Classics for Community, for area students (K-12) and their families. The event will feature the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Paul Polivnick, and will be followed by a luncheon sponsored by Families Yes!. The program will include excerpts from Rossini's Semiramide Overture, Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major, featuring pianist Monique Duphil, and Mozart's "Prague" Symphony, No. 38.

The concert, which is a free event, takes place in the College's Finney Chapel, located at the intersection of Lorain (Route 511) and Professor Streets, across from Tappan Square. The luncheon immediately following the concert will be at the First Church, on the corner of Lorain and Main Streets.

George Sakakeeny, bassoon professor at Oberlin Conservatory, is the organizer of the event. "This concert will be the first in a series of concerts that will bring together area families, schools, and the Conservatory into a community committed to having great music in the lives of everyone in town." says Sakakeeny. Classics for Community is also working in the public schools in conjunction with Oberlin Music Coalition and other Conservatory students to hold workshops and other outreach programs. Oberlin Music Coalition will sponsor the next children's concert on February 2, 2002.
