OBERLIN COLLEGE ANNOUNCES ARTIST RECITAL SERIES FOR 2001-2002

SEPTEMBER 12 , 2001-- For 123 years, the venerable Artist Recital Series at Oberlin College has brought distinguished, world-renowned musicians and ensembles to Finney Chapel at Oberlin's campus in northeast Ohio. Subscription tickets are now available for the seven-concert, 2001-2002 season, which features pianist Richard Goode, the American Brass Quintet, the Cleveland Orchestra, cellist Janos Starker, the Tokyo String Quartet, soprano Barbara Bonney, and Cleveland's Baroque Orchestra, Apollo's Fire. The Artist Recital Series is sponsored by the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College with the support of the Friends of the Artist Recital Series. Media sponsorship is provided by WCLV, 104.9-FM, Cleveland's classical music radio station.

Each concert takes place in the College's Finney Chapel, located at the intersection of Lorain (Route 511) and Professor Streets, across from Tappan Square. Three and seven concert packages are available, as are tickets to individual concerts; prices vary accordingly. Please contact the Central Ticket Service 24-hour reservation line at 440-775-8169 for more information. Concert artists, programs, and dates are subject to change.

The season begins Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 8:00 p.m. with the American pianist Richard Goode, of whom The Guardian noted: "There are few people who can put across the sheer joy of playing the instrument better than . . . Richard Goode." The evening's program consists of Mozart's Sonata, K 533 in F Major, Debussy's Four Preludes, Beethoven's Sonata, No. 26 in E-flat, and Schubert's Sonata in A major, D 959.

The second concert of the season takes place Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 8:00 p.m. with the American Brass Quintet. Hailed by Newsweek as "the high priests of brass," they are the longest continuously performing brass quintet in North America. On Sunday, Dec. 2 at 3:00 p.m., the Cleveland Orchestra makes its annual sojourn to Oberlin to perform works by Haydn, Strauss, and Weber (Clarinet Concerto No.2 with soloist Franklin Cohen) under conductor Ivan Fischer.

The spring season of the Artist Recital Series begins Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002 at 3:00 p.m., with a special event concert by Janos Starker. The legendary cellist is known throughout the world as a soloist, recording artist, and distinguished teacher.

On Sunday, Feb. 24, at 8:00 p.m., the Tokyo String Quartet will perform. The ensemble features Mikhail Kopelman, violin; Kihuei Ikeda, violin; Kazuhide Isomura, viola; and Clive Greensmith, cello. The accomplished lyric soprano Barbara Bonney comes to Oberlin on Sunday, March 3, at 8:00 p.m. Widely recognized as a superlative recital and concert artist, she has been praised for her radiant tone, interpretative gifts, and stylistic versatility in a repertoire that ranges from baroque to 20th-century music.

The 2001-2002 season concludes Saturday, April 27 at 8:00 p.m., with a performance by Apollo's Fire, the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra. This ensemble, under the guidance of founder and 1992 Oberlin graduate Jeannette Sorrell, has gained national attention for the spark and freshness of its performances.

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, founded in 1865, is the nation's oldest continuously operating conservatory, and the only major music school in the country linked with a preeminent college of arts and sciences. The Conservatory offers majors in performance, composition, music education, music theory, electronic and computer music, jazz studies, music history, and a double major in piano performance and vocal accompanying. There are more than 400 public concerts on campus each year--most of them free.
