OBERLIN COLLEGE STUDENTS TO HOST ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN CONFERENCE MARCH 1-3

JANUARY 12, 2002--"Transcending Boundaries: Communities, Crisis and Resistance" is the title of the 12th Biennial Midwest Asian Pacific American (APA) Conference, which will bring noted Asian Pacific American (APA) activists, scholars and artists to Oberlin College Friday, March 1 through Sunday, March 3 under the auspices of the student-led APA Conference Committee.

The keynote speaker will be Howard University Law Professor Frank Wu, author of the just-released Yellow: Race in American Beyond Black and White. The conference also will feature a number of Oberlin College APA alumni, including banquet speaker Sonia Shah '90, the editor of the book Dragon Ladies: Asian American Feminists Breathe Fire.

Over 30 years of activism and struggle for Asian American Studies have resulted in this year's conference, says the APA Conference Committee. Its purpose is to provide a space for APA students as well as for the Oberlin College community to learn about the history and issues concerning Asian Americans.

The three-day event will focus on the events that followed the September 11 disaster and how they have impacted the APA community. Among the topics to be considered will be APA media representation; mixed race and hybrid APA identity; the coalition between communities of color; labor and immigration; gender, nationalism and violence; Asian American Studies; and post September 11 backlash and violence.

The conference also will include a performance by Filipino/Colombian artist Sonia "gigi" Otalavaro-Hormillosa titled, Inverted Minstrel, and a performance by up-and-coming San Francisco-based spoken word group 8th Wonder. Workshops are free and open to Oberlin College students; the performance by 8th Wonder and the conference banquet are ticketed events.

Members of the public wishing to attend the conference must register to participate. The registration fees, which do not include meals or lodging, are $15 until February 15 and $25 after that date. Sliding registration fees are available for some participants with advanced notice. Tickets for 8th Wonder for those with Oberlin College identification are $3 and they may be obtained at Wilder Hall main desk. General admission tickets are $6. Ticket cost for the conference banquet tba. For more information, please visit the APA 2002 Conference page or contact K.T.
