VASSAR PROFESSOR TO LECTURE ON SLAVE MEMOIRS AND AUTOBIOGRAPHIES MARCH 12 AT OBERLIN COLLEGE

FEBRUARY 28, 2002-- Vassar Professor Gretchen Gerzina will discuss slave autobiographical writing in a lecture titled "Mobility in Chains: Travel Writing in the Early Black Atlantic" at 7 P.M. March 12 at Oberlin College.

Gerzina is professor of English and Director of Africana Studies at Vassar College.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be presented in West Lecture Hall in Oberlinƒs new Science Center, 119 Woodland St.

From March 11 through the 15th, Professor Gerzina also will serve as a visiting instructor and teach a week-long seminar -- Writing Black Lives: Biography, Autobiography and the Narrative.

The course will examine the particular demands (historical, social, psychological and political) of writing biographies and memoirs of black people, as well as the ways that questions of audience affect the narrative structure and voice.
