TOKYO STRING QUARTET PERFORMS IN OBERLIN ON FEBRUARY 24

FEBRUARY 21, 2002-- The Oberlin College Artist Recital Series presents the Tokyo String Quartet on Sunday, February 24, at 8:00 P.M. in Finney Chapel, located at the corner of Professor and Lorain Streets in Oberlin. To order tickets, please call the Central Ticket Service at 440-775-8169. Tickets range from $7 for students to $18 for the public.

The program will include Brahms's String Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 67; String Quartet in A minor, Op. 51, No. 2; and Joan Tower's String Quartet No. 2 "In Memory".

The Tokyo String Quartet has captivated audiences and critics alike since it was founded more than thirty years ago. One of the supreme chamber ensembles of the world, the Quartet is comprised of violist Kazuhide Isomura, a founding member of the group, second violinist Kikuei Ikeda, who joined the ensemble in 1974, first violinist Mikhail Kopelman, formerly of the Borodin Quartet, and cellist Clive Greensmith, formerly Principal Cellist of London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Other U.S. performances include Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston and Miami, with international engagements in Tokyo, Toronto, Calgary, Madrid, Rome, Paris, Utrecht, London, Bonn, Amsterdam, Athens, Florence, Tel Aviv, Buenos Aires, Berlin and Salzburg. The Tokyo also maintains its position as Quartet-in Residence at Yale University and its deep commitment to music education through giving performances and masterclasses at universities across the country.

The Tokyo String Quartet has released more than thirty landmark recordings, including the complete quartets of Beethoven, Schubert, and Bartók. The ensemble's recordings of works by Brahms, Debussy, Dvorák, Haydn, Mozart, Ravel and Schubert have earned numerous honors, including seven Grammy nominations. The Tokyo has also been featured on PBSƒs Sesame Street and Great Performers and on CNN This Morning.

Officially formed in 1969 at The Juilliard School of Music, the Tokyo String Quartet traces its origins to the Toho School of Music in Tokyo, where the founding members were profoundly influenced by Professor Hideo Saito. Soon after its creation, the Quartet won First Prize at the Coleman Competition, the Munich Competition and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, and signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon.

The Quartet performs on "The Paganini Quartet," a group of renowned Stradivarius instruments named for legendary virtuoso Niccolò Paganini who acquired and played them during the 19th century. The instruments have been loaned to the ensemble by the Nippon Music Foundation.

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, founded in 1865, is the nation's oldest continuously operating conservatory, and the only major music school in the country linked with a preeminent college of arts and sciences. The Conservatory offers majors in performance, composition, music education, music theory, electronic and computer music, jazz studies, music history, and a double major in piano performance and vocal accompanying. There are more than 400 public concerts on campus each year--most of them free--including performances by student ensembles, faculty members, and performances and master classes by guest artists.
