CREDO CHAMBER MUSIC ASSOCIATION, LED BY OBERLIN CONSERVATORY VIOLA PROFESSOR PETER SLOWIK, ANNOUNCES PROGRAMMING

JUNE 25, 2002--Peter Slowik, professor of viola at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College and artistic director of Credo Chamber Music Association (CCMA), announces CCMA's fourth summer of programming, with activities that include a series of public Oberlin concerts, some of which are free, a Chicago-area tour, and performances in Alaska.

The program includes a string pedagogy workshop to be held on the campus of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music from July 7 to July 20. Approximately 60 students, chosen from nearly 120 applicants from across the country, will participate in 14 days of chamber music, community-service work, and worship. Twenty of these musicians will travel to Wheaton and Northbrook, Illinois, for concert performances on July 21 and 22. These musicians will also perform community-service work in the Chicago area before traveling to Goshen, Indiana, where a concurrent Credo program is taking place at Goshen College. There they will join approximately 30 high school and college-age singers, gathered for a week of vocal chamber music. A festival concert featuring the Oberlin Credo instrumentalists and the Goshen Credo vocalists will take place on Friday, July 26. A string quartet selected from the original group of Oberlin Credo participants will perform the final activity of CCMA's 2002 summer program. The quartet will travel to Fairbanks, Alaska, for one week of performances and community service in the city and surrounding areas.

"Credo Chamber Music Association is unusual because of the way it combines musical excellence with high-level professional training in an environment of service," says Artistic Director Slowik, an internationally known concert and recording artist. "With a new choral program, our largest string enrollment to date, and two tours, including a first-ever to Alaska, Credo continues to show signs of rapid growth."

Slowik founded CCMA in 1999, when he was a professor at Northwestern University. Parents of serious music students and several Chicago area music educators and pastors joined him in creating the first session.

Recent CCMA students include state winners from the American String Teachers' Solo Competition; prizewinners in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition; students from the nation's top conservatories, including Eastman, Indiana, Juilliard, Oberlin, and Peabody; and principal players from youth orchestras in Atlanta, Chicago, and Milwaukee. CCMA faculty include the Dean of Juilliard; players from the nation's top orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, and Pittsburgh Symphony (principal); and Slowik, who is president of the American Viola Society.

"Credo's success lies in its unique design," says Slowik. "Credo's high-level professional training includes the most instructional time devoted to chamber music (1.5 hours daily) of any program in the country. Individual contact with faculty -- leading artist-teachers--is provided through private lessons and master classes. What further sets Credo apart is its holistic approach, with musical excellence set as an important component of a disciplined life. Credo affirms that this 'disciple-ship' can be best developed through close modeling of the all-powerful yet sacrificial life of Jesus. Credo teaches students to 'offer' every part of their being to others, serving them with simple physical labor (cleaning homeless shelters, etc.), as well as using their specially developed musical gifts by playing concerts for those who could not otherwise have the opportunity to hear live music. Through this unusually healthy approach to music study, as the extension of a focused and balance life, Credo empowers its students to be more winsome and productive members of their communities, musical ensembles, and families."
