FRANK “HAPPY” DOBBS NAMED OBERLIN COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH

JUNE 5, 2002--Oberlin, Ohio – Frank "Happy" Dobbs has been named head coach of the men’s basketball program at Oberlin College. The announcement was made by Clayton R. Koppes, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and vice president of academic affairs.

"Dobbs’ experience in both playing and coaching will be invaluable to Oberlin’s basketball program," said Koppes. "He has coached at many fine institutions. He also has maturity, passion, knowledge of the game, and the ability to relate well to people."

Currently an assistant basketball coach at Cleveland State University, Dobbs was chosen from more than 100 applicants and will begin his new position July 1. In addition to his coaching duties at Oberlin, Dobbs will also serve as assistant athletics director. "I am really looking forward to coming to Oberlin," said Dobbs. "Oberlin has a terrific academic reputation and the men’s basketball program has a lot of potential to grow. Oberlin provides a great opportunity to create a balance between academics and athletics and foster the well being of its student-athletes. My goal is to have a program that strives for success both on and off the court. I want to have a classy program that not only wins, but has players who are seen as first-class individuals on-campus, by alumni and after they graduate from Oberlin."

In addition to coaching at CSU, Dobbs was the head coach at Brown University (1991-1999), an assistant at Boston College (1988-1991) and an assistant at Dartmouth College (1984-1988). He also has extensive playing experience. A four-year starter at Villanova University, Dobbs helped lead the Wildcats to four consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including two appearances in the sweet sixteen and two trips to the elite eight. In 1984 he was drafted in the eighth round by the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association.

Members of the men’s basketball team are pleased with the selection of Dobbs.

"Out of the three finalists, he was the one that most of us wanted. I think it’s a good fit. We’re looking forward to next season," said R. Jon MacDonald, who will be entering his fourth year at forward for the Yeomen.
