||||||||||||
MARCH 25, 2002--Oberlin College continues its annual Convocation series with an address by Civil Rights activist Julian Bond Wednesday, April 3. Bond's free, public talk, Civil Rights Then and Now, will take place at 8:00 P.M. in the College's Finney Chapel, located on the corner of N. Professor and W. Lorain Sts. Julian Bond was elected chair of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1998 and has been a spokesman for the disinherited and a participant in the movements for civil rights, economic justice, and peace since he was a college student leading sit-in demonstrations in the 1960s. A founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, he has faced jail for his beliefs. During his 20 years of service in Georgia's General Assembly, he sponsored more than 60 bills that became law. Bond also is president emeritus of the Southern Poverty Law Center. His many affiliations, past and present, include membership on the advisory boards of several organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union and Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. A writer, teacher, and lecturer, Bond appears regularly on America's Black Forum, the oldest black-owned program in television syndication. His poetry and articles have appeared in numerous publications. |
