NOVEMBER 14, 2002--Four seniors at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College have won the Conservatorys 2002 Concerto Competition, held in Finney Chapel October 12. The four, selected from among 16 finalists, have secured spots as soloists with the Oberlin Orchestra and Oberlin Chamber Orchestra during the 2002-03 concert season. All concerts will take place in Finney Chapel and will be conducted by Steven Smith, associate professor of conducting and music director of the Oberlin Orchestras. Two of the concerts are scheduled for live broadcast on WCLV-104.9 FM, Clevelands classical music radio station. A complete schedule of these performances is available online. This years winners include three pianists and one violinist. Mark Barden 03 (of Cleveland, Ohio) and Elena Loskova 03 (of Zaporogzije, Ukraine) both study with Professor of Piano Studies Monique Duphil, while Daniela Flonta 03 (of Zalau, Romania) is a student of Professor of Pianoforte Peter Takács. Julia Sakharova 03 (of Zgeleznovodsk, Russia) studies with Professor of Violin Milan Vitek. Numerous outstanding performances made the competition particularly difficult this year, according to Associate Dean David Stull, who chairs the competition committee. "The judges were faced with a very difficult decision in selecting only four finalists this year," he says. "The performances by all of the participants demonstrated the extraordinary depth of talent that has long been a hallmark of the Oberlin Conservatory." The competition jury each year is composed of one faculty member from each performance division, one faculty member from a nonperformance division, and an outside adjudicator. This years judges were Professor of Music Theory Allen Cadwallader; Professor of Flute Michel Debost; Assistant Professor of Violin Kyung Sun Lee; Professor of Singing Daune Mahy; Professor of Pianoforte Sanford Margolis; Associate Professor of Conducting and Music Director of the Oberlin Orchestras Steven Smith; and Robert Sherman, host of the McGraw-Hill Young Artists Showcase on WQXR, the classical music radio station of The New York Times. The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, founded in 1865, became part of Oberlin College in 1867. It is the oldest, continuously operating conservatory in the United States, and is renowned internationally as a professional music school of the highest caliber situated within the intellectual vitality of a liberal arts college. |
